How i met your Father

My previous post reflecting on marriage was on the ocassion of our first wedding anniversary. You can read it here . An extra special date Today, Aug 29, is special not just because its our wedding anniversary but also because firstly its the feast of St John the Baptist (who is so important that he is one among 3 persons, along with Jesus and Mama Mary, whose birthday is celebrated as a solemnity in the chruch) , secondly its the death anniversary of St Euphrasia (usually celebrated as feast day in the case of saints) and thirdly its the flag hoisting day at the annual feast of our lady of good health, Velankanni, Nagapattinam. And this is not coincidence but Godincidence because i had made a pilgrimage to both Velankanni and the tomb of St Euphrasia in Thrissur , seeking their intercession to find my bride groom , just few months before i met and married my husband. Why is God angry with Chennai?

As my home city was ravaged by rains, the likes of which we hadn't had in over 100 years, a former boss asked me this - Why is God angry with Chennai?When natural disaster strikes, those who have any form of theistic belief system often ponder this- Was God angry? Knowing that most of us have a belief in some form of God, I had been expecting the question and it did not surprise me. But I did struggle to articulate my response which was based on an inward knowing, the truth I had held on to myself in face of devastation all around. My belief is quiet simply, we have no way of knowing the thoughts and purpose of God unless He reveals it. So it's really quiet illogical to conclude God is angry when he could also have been wanting to prune, mould and draw us close through the episode. Vicissitudes often bring out the best in us and that indeed has happened in the case of Chennai. For one, we realized society isn't as heard hearted and selfish as we had imagined it to be. Man

Restless untill i rested in Him

I said 'yes' last August 29 after a few heart aches, heart breaks and times of serious self-doubt. Being a 29 year old unmarried woman in India, where it is common for even college educated women to marry as young as 21, right after under graduation, it definitely not a comfortable situation to put it plainly. The cross-questioning and scrutiny one is subjected to by family, friends, colleagues and even the boss are nothing but daily stress interviews! Marriage is still viewed by most as the litmus test of one's standing as a human person, especially for women. Not only does it matter, in the worldly view point, when one marries, but also who one marries- Are they of good stock? Do they look good? Do they dress good? Will their family look good next to ours in a photograph? (Funny, but i was actually asked to consider this by a well meaning family member) Do they have wealth? Do they have influence? Do they have good education credentials?
